a troubling synonym.

American English

pants: what you wear on your legs (ie: jeans)
underwear: what you wear underneath your pants

UK English

trousers: what you wear on your legs (ie: jeans)
pants: what you wear underneath your trousers

Result: I am awkward. Frequently.
